IN CHAMERAU, BAVARIAN FOREST, GERMANY |
Chamerau, a village of about 2700 residents, is divided by the Regen river which flows into the Danube by Regensburg, a beautiful and historically significant city nearby. It has a new supermarket, a bank, a church, several restaurants, butcher shops, bakeries and a beauty shop. For more shops and restaurants, the medieval towns of Cham and Kötzting are only a short drive of 7 and 9 km away. The new Oberpfalzbahn (Oberpfalztrain) also stops in Chamerau.
The Regental-Radweg, a very scenic bicycle path, which is connected to a large network of bicycle paths winds along the Regen river and the Bavarian Interlude Chalet.
The people in Chamerau are warm and outgoing. They practice and cultivate ancient customs and enjoy traditional music and offer specialties in food and drink.
Chamerau is first mentioned in historical documents in 1361. A fortress on a hill used to house robber barons. In 1446, eleven robber barons, two of them from Chamerau, were executed in Straubing, another nearby town, by Herzog (duke) Albrecht III. The bad Chamerauer is referred to in the medieval play, the Drachenstich (slaying of the dragon), which is performed every year during August in the town of Furth i. Wald, a few km from Chamerau.
In the map below, the red X indicates the location of the Bavarian Interlude Chalet.
